TOK Workshop – Reflecting on 21st Century Reality

In our media-driven technological age, it is important to reflect on how these influences are changing society. This was the objective of our TOK workshop on Wednesday, July 15, held in The British Schools Auditorium. The afternoon workshop was aimed at all IB students and organised in conjunction between TOK Teachers and the Arts Department, especially the IB Visual Arts Coordinator Mariana Valdes.

The afternoon consisted of group work reflecting on how the 21st century reality is affecting work, family, reading and writing, the economy, power structures, our sense of self and how we create community. The event was capped with the elaboration of symbols which represent this reality and will be mounted in the form of a mural by IB Visual Arts students.

Visit of Mr. Ben Walden

For the second time, Mr. Ben Walden visited The British Schools. On 27th May, Prefects, Leaders and Year 4 Student Council attended Mr. Walden´s Leadership workshop.

Ben Walden runs these workshops in different countries around the globe. In 2015 he is working in South America.

Students felt inspired and were enriched by the workshop.

Some of the students´ expressions after the workshop were:

“The workshop made me aware of certain things and taught me not to take things for granted. The main qualities of a leader are learnt with experience and with the interaction with others. We need to be conscious of how to achieve those qualities in order to develop them to the best of our abilities. A memorable phrase I heard in the workshop was:  “The medium is the message (Marchal McLuhan)”, which means that the way in which a message is being delivered goes beyond the message itself. I believe this will help us understand other people.”

“A good leader is not the one that imposes his ideas, but the one that helps others shine and give their best in whatever they do.”

“Every human being is a miracle and is extremely important.  Life is a miracle in itself.” (Francisco Stanham).

Why Teens Are Impulsive, Addiction-Prone And Should Protect Their Brains

Teens can’t control impulses and make rapid, smart decisions like adults can — but why?

Research into how the human brain develops helps explain. In a teenager, the frontal lobe of the brain, which controls decision-making, is built but not fully insulated — so signals move slowly.

“Teenagers are not as readily able to access their frontal lobe to say, ‘Oh, I better not do this,’ ” Dr. Frances Jensen tells Fresh Air‘s Terry Gross.
