Prefects

The 2015 elected students proudly assumed their roles as they signed the Prefects Book and pledged their commitment to the responsibility that this implies.

Prefects are an important part of The British School’s traditions and institutional identity.  The role of a Prefect requires teamwork, loyalty, companionship and leadership.  Prefects also act as representatives of the student body and ambassadors of the School.  In this sense, the Prefects can be seen welcoming new students, receiving parents on a variety of occasions, helping with community campaigns and events, as well as representing the School at special commemorations and celebrations.

IB Geography takes learning beyond the classroom

IB Geography students visited Montevideo's Old City on the 10th of April.  In recent years a revival of the Old City has occurred in part due to an improved economic situation in the region but also due to an increase in tourist numbers. This field work activity gave the students an opportunity to investigate the changing urban morphology of the Old City and the role of tourism. The students carried out questionnaires, pedestrian counts and environmental quality surveys. This field trip contributes to the students acquiring important practical skills and knowledge for IB Geography.

Five secrets to revising that can improve your grades

"How do you get the most out of your revision time, and end up with the best grades you can? Or, if you're a different sort of student, how can you get the same grades you're getting now, but spend less time revising?

Either way, you need to know how to learn better. And fortunately, decades of research carried out by psychologists about learning and memory has produced some clear advice on doing just that.

As an experimental psychologist, I am especially interested in learning.

Most research on learning is done in a lab, with volunteers who come in once or twice to learn simple skills or lists of words.

Wouldn't it be better, I thought, if we could study learning by looking at a skill people are practising anyway? And could we draw links between how people practise and how good they eventually get?"

World Water Day

The United Nations General Assembly designated March 22nd as World Water Day in 1993 to recognise the importance of water as a basic necessity of life and the need to mange this precious resource wisely. On this day, Ryan's Well promotes awareness for water,  think of the impact of not having access to clean water and of the need to conserve and protect our freshwater supplies.

In 2014, during Water Week, the CAS Team and CAS students invited students across all subjects to produce work related to the theme of WATER. The aim was to help increase awareness about the need for access to safe water for everyone.

A Bake Sale and Non-Uniform Day were also held to raise funds for the Ryan’s Well Foundation to support their new School Challenge project - to help bring water and sanitation facilities to schools without these very basic needs - so it really does change their lives.

TOK Guest Lecturer - Pablo Casacuberta

The renowned artist Pablo Casacuberta visited TBS on Thursday, March 12 to give a lecture titled "Apuntes para una historia natural del arte".  He addressed all IB students and challenged conventional thinking about why people do art.  He focused on insights provided by recent research in neuroscience to argue that art is a biological imperative that has allowed our evolution as a species.  It was an interesting and thought-provoking event.
