RISK-TAKERS AND INNOVATORS – 5th YEARS ATTEND A HACKATHON FOR A SMART CITY

Eleven 5th year students participated in a day long workshop held on the 8th of September in the IMM organized by the International NGO Girls In Tech. These students led by Rosina Machitelli and accompanied by Gabriela Malvarez and Bernadette Keane accepted a last-minute challenge to form two teams that would have the opportunity to come up with ideas and innovative technological solutions to make their city a Smart City.

Along with students from other private and public schools they listened attentively to presentations from experts in the field of engineering, social sciences and computing. Then they had to go to work and come up with an innovative technological solution to a problem in our city related to mobility, environmental quality and hygiene and social harmony.  These groups then had to present their solutions to the representatives of the NGOs and the other participating teams.

One group of British School’s students proposed the development of an App to improve the current waste collection system while the other developed a concept about how to develop training programs in our city’s prisons and thus reduce recidivism.

This hackathon provided our students an excellent opportunity to think out of the box and take a proactive stance to understanding and dealing with the very real problems their city faces.
