Year 3 - MAPI visit

To explore the transdisciplinary theme 'How do we express ourselves?', the Year 3 pupils took part in an educational visit to the Museum of Pre-Columbian and Indigenous Art (MAPI). This activity served as the starting point for understanding the first line of inquiry, 'How a culture from the past expresses itself,' and an inquiry-based learning experience was developed, promoting active exploration and the development of critical thinking skills through direct engagement with cultural heritage.
During the visit, the students took part in an archaeology workshop, which gave them a hands-on experience of the daily life of the indigenous peoples who lived in what is now Uruguay, prior to the arrival of Europeans. They also explored collections of artefacts found in the Río de la Plata basin, which helped deepen their understanding of the symbolic, artistic, and expressive manifestations of these cultures.
This experience helped to strengthen attributes of the IB learner profile, such as inquirer, by encouraging natural curiosity and autonomy in the pursuit of knowledge, and knowledgeable, by enriching their understanding of diverse historical and cultural contexts. At the same time, it aligned with the graduate profiles set out in the Uruguayan curriculum framework, particularly in relation to the development of critical thinking, appreciation of cultural heritage, and the shaping of citizenship committed to historical memory and diversity.
